"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" premieres on HBO

Updated: Jan 20

I was initially so excited to watch this, but it being another remake of existing IP, I didn't let me hopes get to high (as we know notoriously those can be quite bad). Good thing I didn't.

This prequel still has potential as it was only the first episode, but I doubt it's going to get better. Though, I will hold out hope. I will say, the one thing I loved is that the writers wanted to make the genre more comedic. Love, love, love that idea.

The only thing is they failed to conquer the comedic beats. I mean, the first comedic moment was him taking a shit. Then next was him hitting his head. Those are just classic cliche troupes that beginning writers use. It's just cheap comedy. I know these writers can't be beginners as they are working on an HBO show, so my guess is some production executive pushed for this to be included, thinking of their own brilliance. That's what happens with people of a certain amount of power.

STORY TIME: I remember when I was paired up with a celebrity to write this script. They had not a lot of writing experience. So their ideas were really novice and cliche. And all writers have been there! I've been there! Once we keep training and get past that, we can diver deeper and pull better ideas. The only problem with people of a certain amount of ego is that they think it's so brilliant and even with thorough explanation, they can't unsee it's brilliance. Needless to say, regardless of the First Look Deal, I had to leave the project.

And that's what went wrong with the comedic moments in this premiere episode. The comedic beats served no story purpose. It was trying to get a quick laughs. The best and most intelligent comedic writing is when the beats are interwoven into the story. The beat serves more than one purpose. It serves the audience for comedic relief and it moves the plot forward.

So should we Binge or Cringe

Cringe!

Pass on this one. Holding out for the next remake of GOT.
